Way Public Library is joining public libraries across Ohio in urging Governor Mike DeWine to protect access to information and uphold the role of parents—not the government—in deciding what their children read.
We are deeply concerned about a provision added to the Ohio budget. This provision would restrict any library material related to gender identity or sexual orientation from being visible to anyone under the age of 18.
Way Public Library, like others across the state, already has policies in place to guide the selection, placement, and access to materials. Parents and guardians play an essential role in guiding their children's reading choices—and we respect and support that responsibility.
But this provision could force libraries into impossible and costly decisions. Some systems estimate millions of dollars and years of work would be required to comply. That’s time and money taken away from serving our community.
Here is the exact language as currently written: “Requires a public library to place material related to sexual orientation or gender identity or expression in a portion of the library that is not primarily open to the view of minors.” This language is vague, unworkable, and deeply troubling. It raises serious questions:
- Who decides what is "related to" gender identity or sexual orientation?
- How are libraries expected to review, reclassify, or restrict thousands of items?
- Should entire sections of the library be closed off to anyone under 18?
We need your voice to protect your library.
